International Student Mobility Charter

In January 2013, The International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) has joined the European Association for International Education (EAIE), and other like‐minded associations around the world, to put forward a new International Student Mobility Charter.

The charter recognises the complexity of student mobility and provides a framework for countries and higher education institutions to support the high volume of incoming and outgoing students around the world. It encompasses:

  1. Equity of treatment
  2. Intercultural competences
  3. Integration of international students
  4. Opportunity to complete studies
  5. Portability and continuity of funding
  6. Student status
  7. Visas and formal requirements
  8. Information
  9. Student rights support
  10. Quality assurance

In 2010, more than 4 million students were studying outside their home countries. According to UNESCO, the number of international higher education students around the world may rise to 8 million by 2025.

IEAA calls on governments and education institutions, as well as international agencies and international education associations, to endorse, support and promote the Charter:
