IEAA Data Webinar | Recovery in Learning Abroad - Data, Trends and Practitioner Insights

Learning abroad is a central pillar of Australian universities’ internationalisation efforts and plays a critical role in supporting Australia’s broader foreign policy, trade and strategic engagement objectives. This webinar offers the opportunity to access insights into learning abroad through national data and engage directly with sector experts to analyse emerging trends, discuss future strategy and explore how universities can respond to evolving challenges in the learning abroad landscape.

Since 2009, the Australian Universities International Directors’ Forum (AUIDF) has conducted an annual Benchmarking of Learning Abroad (BLA), providing the sector with the most comprehensive dataset on outbound student mobility. In this session, Keri Ramirez will present the latest benchmarking results commissioned by AUIDF, highlighting key findings that will be explored through a panel discussion featuring senior leaders from across the sector and an interactive Q&A session. 

The panel draws on diverse perspectives to contextualise shifts in student participation, changing patterns in demand and the factors influencing mobility choices post-COVID. The discussion will offer clarity on who is participating in learning abroad programs, what barriers students face and what drives engagement today. Participants will gain evidence-based insights to strengthen strategic planning, program design and institutional advocacy for learning abroad.

This webinar will be chaired by Lyndell Jacka, IEAA Research Committee Member and Chair of IEAA’s Data Group. Panel speakers include Christine Martin; Linda Rust; Professor Kent Anderson; and Keri Ramirez.

Prof Kent Anderson 

Executive Director 

Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) 

Professor Kent Anderson is an international lawyer specialising in the Asia-Pacific. He has had senior executive roles at four Australian universities, most recently as Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Newcastle. Kent has an eclectic background, having been an academic in Australia, the USA, and Japan; a marketing manager with a US regional airline in Alaska; a commercial lawyer in Hawaii; and senior adviser for higher education to two Australian Ministers of Education. Kent served on a number of boards including National Library of Australia, Ministerial Council for International Education, Higher Education Standards Panel, New Colombo Plan, Canberra Grammar School, Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education and President of the Asian Studies Association of Australia.

Lyndell Jacka, IEAA-SF 

Senior Principal, Insights 

University of Queensland (UQ) 

Lyndell is currently Senior Principal, Future Students Insights at The University of Queensland. An experienced market insights professional with over a decade in international education, she has led, shaped, and developed research and data insights at organisations such as IDP Education, Edified, Austrade, and Studyportals. She is passionate about interpreting market data and intelligence to help the sector unlock value and inform evidence-based decision making. Lyndell chairs IEAA’s Data Group, a subcommittee of the Research Committee, and is a member of the Research Committee.

Christine Martin 

Director of Global Engagement 

Southern Cross University 

Christine Martin leads Southern Cross University’s global engagement strategy, advancing international partnerships and transnational education initiatives, with a strong focus on expanding student mobility opportunities for SCU’s diverse cohort. With over 25 years of experience spanning ELICOS, VET, and Higher Education, she brings a deep expertise in student mobility, recruitment, transnational education, student support, and operational leadership. Christine is committed to building inclusive pathways that link communities with global networks, ensuring Southern Cross University serves as a catalyst for international collaboration.

Keri Ramirez 

Managing Director and Co-Founder

Keri is an Economist with over 18 years’ experience in international education. He previously worked at Macquarie University after completing his Master in International Business. He was the Virtual Marketing Coordinator at Macquarie International which saw him manage, not only the universities international online marketing strategies, but also managed the marketing intelligence reports, student communication and enquiry protocols for Macquarie International. He established Studymove in 2007 and has completed various consulting projects for numerous Australian and International universities in the areas of benchmarking in Learning Abroad, marketing intelligence and online marketing. Keri loves stats and loves telling a story with data! He has presented at various domestic and international conferences including AIEC, APAIE and NAFSA. Keri won the 2025 IEAA Excellence Award in Professional Commentary.

Linda Rust, IEAA-SF 

Manager, Global Learning 

The University of Melbourne - Global Learning 

Linda is Manager, Global Learning at University of Melbourne. She has previously held roles at RMIT, James Cook University and Flinders University. Linda is currently Convener of the Learning Abroad network.
