Every year, international students from diverse backgrounds come to Australia – from 14-year-old high school students by themselves, through to 30-year-old tertiary students with their families. For this reason, the ‘international student experience’ is far from generic.
With differing motivations and expectations, international students decide where to study based on a range of factors. These include location, course offerings and the reputation of individual education providers, services and facilities, and recommendations from family and friends.
As a sector, it is our responsibility to assist international students in making an informed choice about their study destination and to help them understand what life in Australia is like. We also need to consider how we can ensure that we provide a transformative experience that enriches the lives of all our international students?
By completing this module, you will better understand the range of factors that can affect the international student experience, including:
- variety of accommodation available to international students
- employability of international students
- health, safety and wellbeing of international students
- support that is available for international students
- benefits of engaging international students in their local communities.
Moreover, this module allows you to relate what you explore about international student life to your individual context, while also considering the implications to your future work in the sector.
