IEAA's Learning Abroad Network is Australia's leading forum for all things related to student mobility. Among other events, we facilitate the annual IEAA Learning Abroad Forum and Learning Abroad Fair Circuit.

The theme will allow learning abroad practitioners to examine aspects of:

‘Old’ - encompassing research on the benefits of LA, trends to date, ‘traditional’ models of mobility and how things have been transformed - post COVID

‘New’ – encompassing new researchers in the field, trends in engaging with students, AI, social media and marketing channels, tighter post-COVID LA budgets, developing staff and sector retention, reaching Generations Z and Alpha and think about what experiences and models will appeal.

Please note: DFAT and Palladium are organising an ILO Forum on Wednesday 21 August commencing at 12pm. A registration link will be provided by DFAT/Palladium in due course.

Bosco Anthony is the Chief Brand Officer for Global Rev Gen (GRG), an internationally recognised progressive and fully integrated agency collective and consultancy specialised in the education sector. GRG recently brought to market a world's first AI technology innovation that empowers intelligent reporting in creative performance media. Bosco is a seasoned digital strategist, disruptive storyteller, marketing futurist, and international speaker with a background in design thinking and digital growth.

Brad Dorahy

CEO

Brad is passionate about international education and travel. After graduating from the University of Newcastle, where he was awarded a cultural scholarship and coordinated the second ‘Cultural Awakenings Festival’, Brad travelled the world and has since visited 70+ countries. Brad has been involved in international education for approx. 30 years and worked at a number of Australian Universities and for a number of international companies. Brad studied abroad in NZ and the USA, has attended the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and volunteered abroad on several occasions. Brad has presented at international conferences such as NAFSA, ISANA, the Mobility Forum, AIEC and CCIS and now lives on the Gold Coast, Australia.

Catherine Doran

Community and Government Engagement Lead 

University of Tasmania (UTAS) 

Catherine Doran has worked in higher education for two years engaging with community and industry to design and deliver social action learning that benefits both students and the wider community and is UniGO’s Program Lead. She has over 27 years’ experience leading social and environmental change through community development, education, behaviour change programs and cross-cultural community services. Career highlights include, founding member of CERES Global, a not for profit travel with purpose initiative, the establishment of a social enterprise and Accommodation and Learning Centre for people from a migrant and refugee background.

Jeannette Geesmann, IEAA-AF

Manager, International Student Experience and Global Learning

I have been working in International Education for over 15 years. Growing up in Germany, my passion to support others in learning abroad grew exponentially after my own study abroad in Sydney. After graduating from university and working for a German Education Agent, I returned to Australia in 2011 for a final Aussie experience. Today I am looking after the International Student Experience and Global Learning Team at UWA.

Dr Kirrilee Hughes, IEAA-SF

Research Manager 

International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) 

Kirrilee is an international education consultant and IEAA's Research Manager. She has 15 years of experience in the higher education and schools sectors and held leadership and strategy roles for global education organisations as well as sessional teaching and research positions at four leading Australian universities. Kirrilee is an IEAA Senior Fellow and has special expertise in Indonesia and broader Southeast Asia.

Michelle Kofod

Lead, Learning Abroad Short Programs & Study Abroad 

UNSW Sydney 

Michelle Kofod is the Learning Abroad Lead at the University of New South Wales, and one of Australia's most experienced learning abroad specialists. Michelle is a forward thinker who is passionate about designing effective systems and processes to streamline learning abroad. For 15 years, Michelle has been one of the drivers of one of Australia's largest learning abroad programs and has pioneered many new approaches to managing both students and staff.

Marcela Lapertosa

Director of Education 

Value Learning (Intercultural Specialists) 

Marcela Lapertosa is a Cross-Cultural Psychologist with a passion for fostering intercultural understanding. Marcela is also an intercultural facilitator and trainer who has travelled the world providing intercultural learning training and coaching to students, host families, volunteers, executives, and educators. Marcela led the development of multiple intercultural learning curricula to enhance study abroad experiences including the AFS Global Competence Certificate (GCC), a blended learning program for 18+ study abroad participants. Marcela has designed and managed government funded projects including the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program for DFAT, and the Victorian Young Leaders Programs to China, India and Indonesia on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education. She is on the executive team for the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence and she is a former faculty at the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication.

Elizabeth Lee-Finkelstein

Professional Learning and Programs Coordinator 

International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) 

Hailing from Indonesia, Elizabeth has lived and studied in 4 different countries before migrating to Australia in 2019. With Elizabeth's passion for international education and helping others to succeed in the world of work, she will support IEAA in the administration of the Fellowship program and professional learning modules. Elizabeth has a wealth of experience in international student support and considers herself lucky to live out her passion with the international education community here in Australia. Prior to joining IEAA, Elizabeth held various roles at the University of Auckland, Coder Academy and RMIT Online.

Rob Malicki

Chief Executive Officer 

The Global Society 

For two decades, Rob has been a key part of Australia’s learning abroad story. He organised the first Outbound Mobility Forums and founded the Australian Exchange Fair Circuit. He wrote the national Best Practice Guide on Outbound Mobility and consulted with and advised over half of Australia’s universities. He led the national campaign to remove the OS-HELP loan fee and was a co-architect of the New Colombo Plan. He is CEO of The Global Society and co-hosts the Global Horizons podcast.

Daniel Mather

Murdoch University 

Mr Mather’s role at Murdoch University is focused on developing and implementing an international student recruitment strategy for the Americas and onshore Australia, including support for agent activities and onshore pathway partners. In addition, Mr Mather specialises in supporting study abroad recruitment from France and Germany, working closely with agents and partner universities to provide unique, shorter term opportunities. With a career in international education spanning over 20 years he has worked in a variety of areas including international student recruitment, student mobility, and higher degree research administration at the University of Western Australia, Flinders University, and Queensland University of Technology.

Steven McDonald

Manager, Learning Abroad (Short Programs) 

Western Sydney University 

Steven McDonald is the Manager, Learning Abroad (Short Programs) for Western Sydney University (WSU). He trained in the Australian Army as a young adult in electronics and aircraft engineering, before pursuing a long and successful career in international education. Having worked in universities, government, and private businesses, Steven has demonstrated exceptional dedication to uncovering and advancing innovative best practices in Learning Abroad. Over the last decade, Steven's time at WSU has coincided with the institution's ascendancy to the forefront of global rankings for its contributions to social, ecological, and economic sustainability, as evidenced by its top placement in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings for 2022, 2023 and 2024. Embedded in Greater Western Sydney, WSU addresses key challenges like urban growth and inequality, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cultivating future leaders to solve complex global issues.

Cecile McGuire

International Education Consultant 

 

Cecile McGuire is a bilingual Canadian-Australian and held various international education roles over 20 years at The University of Queensland until she experienced her own personal pandemic disruption, and left Australia at the end of 2020 to spend time with family back in Canada. Cecile's first international role at UQ was Manager, Study Abroad, and her most recent international role after returning to Australia in 2021 brought her full circle as she completed a contract at Bond University as Manager, Study Abroad & Exchange. In between her study abroad sojourns, Cecile worked in central, faculty, and school-based roles focusing on international student recruitment and admissions, and global partnerships. And although Cecile wholeheartedly believes in the road warrior rule that what happens on tour stays on tour, she looks forward to sharing stories of students and study abroad successes!

Prof Can Seng Ooi

Academic Lead of University Global Program 

University of Tasmania (UTAS) 

Can Seng Ooi is a sociologist, Professor and the Academic Lead of University Global Program at the University of Tasmania. As a university educator for more than two decades, he led more than 30 student trips and won more than a dozen teaching awards, including being voted “Best Professor of the Year” by his Executive MBA students at Copenhagen Business School.

Liam Prince

Director 

Australian Consortium for 'In-Country' Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) 

Liam Prince is the Director of the Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) based at The University of Western Australia. He is an energetic advocate for ACICIS and its mission to increase the number of Australian university students undertaking study in Indonesia. An Economics and Indonesian studies graduate from UWA, prior to commencing work for ACICIS in 2012, Liam assisted in the formulation of a national plan for the future of Indonesian language studies in Australian universities.. Liam himself spent a semester as a student in Yogyakarta with ACICIS in 2000 and has ever after been scheming at ways various and novel to get himself back to Indonesia. In 2021, Liam and his ACICIS colleagues received the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA)’s award for Innovation in International Education for Virtual Program Delivery.

Dr Anitha Ramanna

COO 

Authentica 

Dr. Anitha Ramanna is COO at Authentica and is responsible for designing and delivering innovative experiential study abroad programs for Universities in the US, Australia and Canada. Anitha has a doctorate in International Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a postdoctoral fellowship from the International Food Policy Research Institute, Washington D.C. She is a Fulbright Scholar who was affiliated with Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley. She was She was C.R. Parekh fellow with the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005. Anitha has extensive teaching experience in various Universities including S P Jain School of Global Management, Symbiosis School of International Business, and Pune University. Her articles have been published in journals such as the Journal of World Intellectual Property, International Journal of Technology Management, Development Policy Review and Asian Biotechnology and Development Review. Her research interests focus on Intellectual Property Rights, International Relations, Public Policy, and Political Economy of Development.

Keri Ramirez

Managing Director and Co-Founder

Keri is an Economist with over 18 years’ experience in international education. He previously worked at Macquarie University after completing his Master in International Business. He was the Virtual Marketing Coordinator at Macquarie International which saw him manage, not only the universities international online marketing strategies, but also managed the marketing intelligence reports, student communication and enquiry protocols for Macquarie International. He established Studymove in 2007 and has completed various consulting projects for numerous Australian and International universities in the areas of benchmarking in Learning Abroad, marketing intelligence and online marketing. Keri loves stats and loves telling a story with data! He has presented at various domestic and international conferences including AIEC, APAIE and NAFSA.

Prof Sarah Todd, IEAA-SF

Vice President (Global) 

Griffith University 

Professor Todd is Vice President (Global) at Griffith University. Previously, she was the inaugural PVCI at the University of Otago from 2006–13. Sarah is currently President of the Asia Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE), and Chair of the Universities Australia and Innovative Research Universities (IRU) International Committees.
