This webinar is an initiative of IEAA’s Emerging Researchers Group and is the first of a number of events that IEAA will deliver in 2024 focused on prospective and current emerging researchers in international education. 

Are you a student or international education practitioner interested in developing your research skills through an honours program, Masters by Research or PhD? Have you thought about applying for formal research training in a topic related to international education, but you’re not sure where to start? 

This panel features the perspectives of supervisors and research students who have an active research interest in international education. We’ll focus on providing advice on application processes, firming up your proposed topic and seeking out a potential supervisor, with a focus on the Australian research training context. You’ll also hear from two current research students who are also international education practitioners. 

This webinar is open to IEAA Members and non-members and is free of charge. We encourage you to share this information with peers and colleagues who are emerging international education researchers.

This webinar will prove useful for:

  • Students
  • International education practitioners who are considering formal research pathways related to international education, such as honours programs, Masters by research or a PhD.  

Outcomes

Webinar participants will come away with a better understanding of:

  • Learn about application processes for honours programs, Masters by research and PhDs; firming up a proposed research topic and seeking out a potential supervisor, with a focus on the research training context in Australia.
  • Hear the perspectives of research supervisors and current research students, including two current research students who are also international education practitioners.
  • Learn more about IEAA’s Emerging Researchers Group and planned activities for 2024.

Cara Bonnington

Associate Director, Global Mobility
University of Sydney

As Associate Director, Global Mobility Cara oversees Sydney Global Mobility - the teams that manage inbound and outbound student mobility and international agreements at The University of Sydney. Cara works collaboratively with faculties and schools to grow and develop opportunities for student mobility in line with the University's strategic 50% outbound student mobility target. She has a Masters degree in Intercultural Communication from the University of Pennsylvania and is a current PhD candidate in the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

Amanda Daly, IEAA-SF

Deputy Dean Learning & Teaching
Griffith University

Amanda is Deputy Dean, Learning and Teaching, in the Griffith Business School. Over the last 20 years, Amanda has worked within the education industry as an administrator, university business educator and researcher, with a specific focus on international students and student mobility. She also has a wealth of experience as an academic and curriculum developer driving the internationalisation of the curriculum and enhancing the student experience. Amanda is the inaugural Chair of IEAA’s Emerging Researchers Group, which is a sub-committee of the Research Committee.

Elena Williams, IEAA-AF

PhD Researcher
Australian National University (ANU)

Elena is a higher education consultant and PhD candidate at the Australian National University, researching the impact of learning abroad on Australia-Indonesia relations. She previously served as Indonesian Resident Director with The Australian Consortium for 'In-Country' Indonesian Studies (ACICIS), and is a current selection panel member for the Australia Awards Indonesia and New Colombo Plan scholarships, and board member with DFAT's Australia-Indonesia Institute. In March 2024 Elena was selected as a delegate in the Emerging Leaders’ Dialogue as part of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, organised by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Christopher Ziguras, IEAA-SF

Director, Centre for Study of Higher Education
University of Melbourne

Chris' research deals broadly with the internationalisation of higher education, across four main areas of focus: the global diffusion of policy ideas and regulatory approaches; the regulation of cross-border educational flows; the impacts of technological change on higher education teaching and learning; and the international recognition of professional qualifications. Chris has worked extensively with industry bodies, professional associations and government agencies on a wide range of projects and partnerships to jointly undertake research, teaching, professional development, policy advocacy, student mobility and work placements.
